Job Interview of Ave Maria Student, Fall 2008

"I see you went to Ave Maria. Didn't they finish last on the Bar Exam again?"

"Yes, but we're moving to a beautiful new building on the beach in Naples, Florida. I'm sure our bar pass rate will improve once the students aren't distracted by pornography and sin like they are here in filthy Michigan."

"Hum, yes. I guess. Well...Let's see... I see you took Canon Law?"

"Yeah. It was great. The professor taught us why Catholics are superior to everyone else. At least REAL Catholics--you know, virgins."

"I see. Well. ah, did you take any classes that might be more relevant to our practice here. What about Appellate Practice?

"No. One of the evil professors taught that class. Anyone who took it was a sinner. They had to cancel it."

"Federal Courts?

"No. Evil."

"Conflicts of Law?"

"No."

"Sales?"

"Oh dear God, no! That course is very evil.

"So, none of these courses were offered?

"None of them. All evil."

"I see. Hum... Well, Could you tell me what you learned in the class on Catholic Social Thought...."

"We learned that women are like raw meat. Fat people are lazy and useless How to 'preserve' evidence on a hard drive. And why some young boys are just asking for it. It was a great class,"

"Thank you! We'll get back to you very soon."

On it's face, this point seems well made. However, when corrected for other factors, there are very few courses that are not already required and that do not have prerequisites. Several classes involve interesting subjects but little professional utility (including Canon Law, Papal Teaching, Catholic Social Teaching, International Human Rights). Furthermore, because you list the entire offerings of both semesters, your list is redundant and offers little comparative value. Nice try though.

Canon Law and Catholic Social Teaching may be of more practical use than you think. The evolution of canon law, for example, formed the basis of much of our civil procedural law and many rules of evidence. Catholic Social Teaching considers documents like Rerum Novarum that have given impetus to workers' associations and helped shaped the face of workers', management, and union rights and obligations in the area of collective bargaining.

The list was intended to supply facts rather than commentary. Note, however, that the list does include all the courses that the cover joke insinuated AMSL does not offer. The duplicative listings over two semesters show those courses that are offered every semester (although I failed to include RWA and possibly some others in fall 2007). Just because a course is required doesn't mean it shouldn't be listed; from what I understand, for example, a lot of schools don't require Federal Taxation, but I see no reason that the fact that AMSL has more stringent requirements means I should have deleted required courses. After all, Federal Taxation and other required upper-level courses are of practical use, which was the attempted point of the cover joke. Of course, I did eliminate 1L courses from the listing.

I hope you won't mind if I clarify two things, both in the first paragraph of my immediately preceding post. (1) I used the word "civil" in its broader meaning of "secular" to contrast with "canon"; that is, the development of canon law has influenced secular procedural rules, both civil and criminal. (2) My point about Rerum Novarum was worded in an unfortunate manner that sounded like I meant all the documents that Catholic Social Teaching considers have to do with collective bargaining; this is not the case.

    Thank you.

Okay...seems someone needs to explain why the post is funny. The TITLE of the course is not funny. The historical TEACHER of the course is funny.

Professor Safranek taught Sales. Professor Pucillo taught Federal Courts, and Professor Myers teaches Conflicts of Law. These professors are in the "affirmatively injurious" category.

Canon law is typically taught by a professor who recently got tenure...well, you can look it up. She is NOT "affirmatively injurious"...

Do we get the joke now?

Not exactly, but thank you for trying to explain it to me.
